Twitch (b)ads - Enough Said by Titch1987

Twitch Ads:

I recently had a conversation with some people about ads on Twitch. To boil down a long conversation it went something like this: "Amateur Hour Commentary (AHC) runs pre-roll ads to make money and subbing doesn’t get rid of it." Well, that’s partially true; we as affiliates/partners of Twitch are required to run ads. The default is pre-roll – you click on the stream, you get an ad, and then you get the stream. We can delay pre-roll ads for 10 minutes if we run a 30 second ad, 20 minutes for a 60 second, and 30 minutes if we run a 90 second or longer (does this sound preferable?). As for making money, we're talking cents per month. I can’t relay in words how much we don’t care about ad revenue on AHC. If we could remove them completely we would do it that day 100%. As for the true part – subscribing does not get rid of it.

If we think of the setup that we at AHC have, this means we would have to run a 90 second ad at the halfway mark during lobby which is the part where we interact with you guys. I can confidently say we enjoy the interaction with chat as much as the games, so to think if we had to drop a mid-roll ad where you as viewers get to connect with us just sounds appalling. So Twitch says pre-roll ads it is. Small price to pay for uninterrupted content (Paco posted a video on this topic in the discord and as F.Swag puts it – "Its just like you clicked on the stream 5 seconds later").

So we cant turn the pre-roll ads off and we don’t want to run mid roll ads to prevent them as it ruins the flow of the content. Well Twitch has entered the chat and said “so were trying out this new thing where you get a pre-roll ad and you can't control when or how it happens”. Uuuuh...Okay? So were doing Pro League finals, the score is 6-6 (First to 7), teams start engaging, grenades are thrown, people are down, can he get the revive in ti- NEW ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO THIS SHOW YOU COULDN’T CARELESS ABOUT – “credible game Wolfe I cant believe how crazy that ending was, congrats to both teams.”

If that paragraph above doesn’t anger you, I don’t know what will. As F.Swag suggested there may eventually be a way to prevent the mid-roll ads by us being forced to run an ad during lobby break, or maybe we will have to get the “streamers package monthly subscription” if they come out with such a thing to get around it.

Twitch Prime used to remove the ads but they changed that in August of 2018, and Twitch Prime members started getting ads on streams starting Oct 15th 2018. I personally hope we are able to prevent a situation like above as ads are not a thing we are into. Twitch, you make enough money without screwing every content creator and pissing off their viewers. We need a work around or some model to control when these ads have to be played if your going to force these down our throat.

TLDR: Ads suck we don’t like them, we don’t run them for money, Twitch wants more ads, damn you Twitch

Until next time,
